- Asynchronous CMC tool : VoiceThread
2) Your thoughts about how the Synchronous CMC tool and the Asynchronous CMC tool could support learning and the development of language skills. Are there any similarities and differences in how they could support language learning?
Students tend to negotiate for meaning in both CMC tools. This interaction perspective on second language acquistion can be beneficial characteristic of effective learning in CMC.
Also, we've already known about the importance of the balancing the four language skills. However, it was unrealistic way to adjust to classroom in limited time. In this view, these CMC tools will take an important role inside the classroom as well as opportunities for language learning and use outside the classroom.
While Synchronous CMC discourse are usually spontaneous with shorter turns so it helps learners fluency improve, Asynchronous CMC can be more focus on accuracy with taking enough time.
3) Some of your ideas of possible activities and ways that the tools could be used in a language class to supplement in-class content and instruction.
My idea for using CMC tool as supplement in class is the retelling activitiy for encourging learning through pushed out.
Nation said in his book, Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking, "Learners are 'pushed' when, through encouragement or necessity." I think VoiceThread quite well fit for speaking tasks to push students' output. Especially, VoiceThread is asynchronous CMC tool so it can be helpful for students to prepare for a task before the task is performed.
Teachers give the topic including represent a stroy to talk about and then students should describe it. This retelling task push students to understand the language features from the input and to use them productively. Through preparing and rehearsal before uploading the final recoding version, students will be able to practice a lot.
