#8: Open Topic / Reflection

For your final blog post, please feel free to write about any topic related to the course. For example, you can reflect on what you have learned about in the course and your e-portfolio project and also discuss any future goals or plans you have to use technology in your classroom.

I've been to CES as a market researcher. At that time, I saw the company offer a digital platform to increase participation and improve student performance. The classroom connects students with educators and each other, as well as with all of the resources they need - books, videos, apps, study groups, assessment tools.

I've been interested in free eduation system like Khan Academy and MOOC because I've thought high education cost is serious problem in Korea and learning is a life-long companion. Also, how can make people enjoy learning English?
Two things are concerned about the most for me.

Many potential possibilities i found through this course.
The interesting learning ways and the way for equivalent education.

I really appreciate professor Ryan let us know this world.

#7: Mobile App Review

Search for a language learning application designed for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Provide a link to the application's website. Write a brief review of this application that includes information about the app's functions, which devices it is compatible with, and how it can assist or enhance the language learning process.

Articulation Station is compatible with iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Articulation station was developed by Heidi Hanks, a speech-language pathologist and creator of the acclaimed blog MommySpeechTherapy.com (Thoughts of early speech & language development).

One word can be practiced in the beginning, middle, and ending sound.

At the word level, the child can practice the sound with playing the matching game.

At the story level, a short story and a long story are offered.
The stories are pre well-made with the target sound.

other features :
  • Scoring & comprehensive data tracking
  • Voice recording for auditory feedback
  • Save audio recordings to track progress
  • Sorting by syllables at the word level
  • Customize word list
  • Student profiles (name, age, progress notes)
  • Add your own custom images
  • Quick tips on teaching each sound
  • In-depth video tutorials
  • Data backup feature

From the isolated one character to the long story, learners can practice the same sound in progressive process. The recoding system can help learner's self-monitoring and measuring improvement in a long term. The autonomy of choose target sound can be effective in assisting learner's weakness.

#6: Digital Storytelling

1) Write brief reviews about the two tools you used to create short lessons with this week (Digital Storytelling through Storybooks, Cartoons & Comics).

Storybird is a really fun resource for students to create their own stories. Students can look through the site, become inspired by the art and then creat a short story that match the illustrations provided. They can then be saved and printed.

Zimmer Twins is the site for creating animation, especially for kids. There are two categories to sign up : Kids&Families - Educators & Schools . It must be an educational site.
Users can create their own animation by selecting characters, effects, background, and so on.

2) How could these tools be used by teachers AND students? How could they be incorporated into a class?

Zimmer Twins website allows kids to use their imagination and exercise their storytelling powers. This gives students opportunity add their personality when making a movie which motivates them and help improve their language skills at the same time.
If teachers use Zimmer Twins as a story starter and then students finish the story with their imagination and creativity, it would be the best educational way.

Storytelling can be an interesting option using Storybird. Teachers have their students work in teams and assemble a story following a main question or topic. For young learners, publishing their writing can be a good reward.

Students can improve their writing skills to create script to achieve their storytelling goal. Through typed words in speech or thought bubbles, students can make their imagination to be real situation. These activities must be helpful for creative thinking.

#5: Corpora, Concordance, Collocations, Word Frequency

Check out the following sites and report back on how they could be used to inform materials development and classroom instruction:

Compleat Lexical Tutor : http://www.lextutor.ca/

In this site, teachers can analyse text and then identify vocabulary items for teaching and learning.
They also can expend vocabulary knowledge; meaning in different contexts, word families, collocation, register, grammatical associations, and so on.

ex) Online concordancers

A concordance gives a list of several words, phrases, or distributed structures along with immediate contexts, from a corpus or other collection of texts assembled for language study.
a. Corpus-based concordance
b. Text-based concordance
c. Story concordancers

Corpus of Compemporary American English : http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/

Wordle : http://www.wordle.net/

Wordle: spoken corpus 2

I've made a wordle from an article "spoken corpus comes to life". Visual texts helped me understand the main point. It occured to think wordle can be a good tool for pre reading. Students can guess what the story is going to be about or the tone of the story. so, I've read a lot of suggestion from English teacher using wordle. Everything sounds good. But, I have a question. If I don't have a digital copy of the text? I'm not sure typing reading material is an effective way.

It would be better encourage students to use wordle post writing activity. They can analyze their writing and discuss the topic each other.

#4: Podcast Review

1) Provide a link to the podcast on your blog. Give general information about the content and quality.

In this Episode, he is explaining how to say '답답하다' in English.

This podcast is hosted by an American who has lived in Korea for a long time. He helps Koreans with the things that are especially hard for us when we learn English.
As you seen above the video clip, the content of this podcast always deals with the subtle difference between English and Korean. Furthermore, the host is explain the meaning of expression in Korean so even beginner learner can get good information.
The content of this podcast is based on high frequency expression in Korean context. Therefore, I highly recommand that you subscribe 'EnlighinKorean' to learn more native-like speaking.

This is another episode about 'mope',  '삐졌어', Korean high frequency expression.

2) What do you think about the podcast? Which type of learners could benefit from the podcast?

Especially, lots of podcast provide us with plenty of meaningful language, real-world communication, and access to new information. I ,sometimes, listen to podcast about how to use some application effectively. It is good for improving listening skills as well as getting a certain type of knowledge.
Once you subscribe to a podcast feed, new podcasts are automatically downloaded to your computer or phone as soon as they are available, so learners can listen to them at their convenience.

There are many kind of podcast is broadcasting. The use of podcast can help us to expand learning beyond the classroom.

Thus, Intrapersonal, Independant, Auditory, and Self-motivated learners could benefit from the podcast better than other learners. Postcast  can also be very beneficial to learners with curiosity and want extra content.

#3: Synchronous and Asynchronous CMC Tools

1) Brief descriptions of the tools and links to their websites

  • Synchronous CMC tool : Skype

Skype is an online communication service that has both free and paid services available to Skype users, using an internet connection. This is an overview of some of the services Skype can provide that are useful for distance learning.

Skype-to Sype audio calls : Calls can be made form your computer to other Skype.
One-to-one video calls : This allows you to use webcams to add video to your conversations.
Instant messaging : Text-chat with other Skype users via computer.
Screen sharing : This allows you to show what you are doing on your desktop.
Document Share : Send documents, photos or presentations of any size between users.

  • Asynchronous CMC tool : VoiceThread

2) Your thoughts about how the Synchronous CMC tool and the Asynchronous CMC tool could support learning and the development of language skills. Are there any similarities and differences in how they could support language learning?

Students tend to negotiate for meaning in both CMC tools. This interaction perspective on second language acquistion can be beneficial characteristic of effective learning in CMC.
Also, we've already known about the importance of the balancing the four language skills. However, it was unrealistic way to adjust to classroom in limited time. In this view, these CMC tools will take an important role inside the classroom as well as opportunities for language learning and use outside the classroom.

While Synchronous CMC discourse are usually spontaneous with shorter turns so it helps learners fluency improve, Asynchronous CMC can be more focus on accuracy with taking enough time.

3) Some of your ideas of possible activities and ways that the tools could be used in a language class to supplement in-class content and instruction.

My idea for using CMC tool as supplement in class is the retelling activitiy for encourging learning through pushed out.
Nation said in his book, Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking, "Learners are 'pushed' when, through encouragement or necessity." I think VoiceThread quite well fit for speaking tasks to push students' output. Especially, VoiceThread is asynchronous CMC tool so it can be helpful for students to prepare for a task before the task is performed.
Teachers give the topic including represent a stroy to talk about and then students should describe it. This retelling task push students to understand the language features from the input and to use them productively. Through preparing and rehearsal before uploading the final recoding version, students will be able to practice a lot.

#2 - Presentation Tools & Screencasting Tools

1. Describe the Presentation Tool or Screencasting Tool you used. Provide a link to the website.

  • Prezi is a presentation tool that helps you organize and share your ideas.
  • Prezi allows users to show their audience how their entire pesentation fits together, and then users can zoom into the details. This will allow your audience to see the big picture while you foucus on the details. The presenter can present the information in such an interesting manner.
  • Prezi makes it easy to attach media files, such as YouTube videos into your presentations.
  • Prezi offer free accounts to teachers and students. This 'Enjoy' account comes with the extra options.

2. Describe the presentation or activity you created using the tool. Provide a link to the location of your embedded presentation on your Google Site.

https://sites.google.com/site/hyucall/homework/prezi

This is for young learner's vocabulary activity.
I will share the Prezi with students for their post collaborative work.
After they learn the vocabulary of countries and nationalities, they will add some photos, video or texts on the Prezi I used in the class. During the activity, they will expose the target vocabulary and relevant meaningful content, as well as negociation skill with peers.
In addition to that, they will learn how to use the Prezi tool.

3. Describe your experience using the tool. Would you recommend it to other teachers? Why or why not?

The most attractive feature of Prezi is zooming. This is totally different from linear pattern like in Power Point. You can draw lines showing how they connect to each other. This helped arrange the layout of graphics and texst in a meaningful way.

However, I struggled to design my own lesson by using that concept properly. It was difficult for me to draw big picutre and organize concept mapping. Also, all funtions are unfamiliar because I'm used to Powerpoint. I think other teachers will also have similar experience at the first time.
It can be a time consuming for teachers to learn and use a new tool.

Neverthelss, I highly recommend using Prezi in the class. It would be a good teaching tool for visual learners. And that, I personally believe that it is not about just using a new tool, it may be a new way of presenting and teaching.

There are many reasons for this.
It can be explained by the advantages below and the description of potential in #4.
  • Presentations - lead your audience on a visual journey.
  • Meetings - collaborate in real time, across time zones.
  • Mobility - from the cloud, desktop, iPad, or iPhone.

4. Describe potential uses the tool could have in the Korean EFL learning context.

Let us start by considering the facts about the Korean EFL learning context.
In my opinion, the Korean education system has some problems such as mainly lecturing, less participating so that this lead to passive learning. Also, cooperation is not common for students as well as teachers.

I will describe the potential uses of Prezi in both perspectives for teachers and students.

First, Korean EFL learning tend to be through teacher-centered leture. Unlike traditional presentator, Prezi is not desinged for lenghty text boxes so teachers can avoid boring presentation with tons of text. Additionally, because Prezi allows for more than one user edit a project, this web application is great for student-centered learning. Students can work collaboratively and simultaneously from school or home. It must be more easy for using a cloud-based software in Korea because most of schools have high speed Internet service and students have their own smart devices.

Next, Prezi offer special account for educators and have share-ability and reusability. This means Prezi has many advantage for teachers who are willing to share good presentations. These collaborative nature of the web application allows Korean teachers to get feedback not only from their collegues but also from teachers all over the world.

For this reason, I'd like to suggest that teachers use Prezi for the interactive tool rather than just replacing Powerpoint.
